Diana Unaitis, Riding Instructor
Born in Portland, Oregon, Ms. D was raised on a farm with six brothers and sisters, quickly becoming involved in the local 4-H program, where she showed sheep and horses. Specializing in horses, she competed in long distance trail rides, county fairs, and open shows. As her passion for horses grew, she began training and showing many different breeds of domesticated horses, as well as mustangs. At the age of 16 she began volunteering at a therapeutic riding stable, where the executive director introduced her to dressage eventing horses. She has worked at many different show barns including National Show Horses, Gaited Horses, Arabians, Polo Ponies and the travel show, Cavalia.
As she continued in her career, Ms. D became a modeling and personal development instructor, teaching young girls manners, etiquette, and poise. She quickly learned that she loved mentoring, and soon wanted to find a way to be with kids and horses at the same time. Ms. D fulfilled this dream in 2000, when she joined Hunkapi’s team as an PATH Certified Instructional Specialist. Being a part of Hunkapi’s staff has given Ms. D such an amazing opportunity to share her knowledge of how a horse can change a life. Her favorite part is helping children learn to overcome fear and learn to trust, while watching our herd of horses adjust to each child’s need. Ms. D shares that being mindful, present and aware really enables us the full benefit of being with our horses. When Ms. D is not teaching at Hunkapi, she can be found anywhere outdoors; She enjoys biking, adventure hiking, nature and gardening!
